draw here

draw here. is an audio/visual interactive installation by J.C. Ehle. This work aims to explore the notion of democracy in art by encouraging the user to actively participate in a collaborative creation process with the artist.

While the traditional routine of presenting artwork generally consists of an artist creating a piece in its entirety in isolation then presenting it on a wall or gallery space for viewers to react to or critique, this work asks that its viewers step out of a passive role of observation and pick up the pen, put the brush to canvas, or in this case, draw here.

Abstract digital stills created by J.C. loaded in the memory of draw here determine hue and saturation color values of the user’s “brush strokes” on the drawing surface. Once a brush stroke has been completed, it is sent to bespoke animation algorithms which bend and morph the stroke in novel ways. The result is a collaborative work between user and creator with endless possibilities for the outcome of the piece at any given moment.
